Description Black Laced Silver Wyandotte Chicken The Black Laced Silver Wyandotte Chicken is a classic American breed, originating in New York State and recognized by the American Standard of Perfection in 1883. This parent variety of all Wyandotte colors has a long history of being a dependable, dual-purpose bird, prized for both egg production and meat. Cackle Hatchery®’s Black Laced Silver Wyandottes are production-type birds, bred for consistent performance rather than show. Hens are medium-sized, averaging around 6½ pounds, while roosters reach up to 8½ pounds, with pullets and cockerels slightly smaller at 5½ and 7½ pounds, respectively. These birds have clean legs and striking black-laced silvery white feathers with a black tail, complemented by a classic red rose comb, wattles, and earlobes. The breed is docile and easy to handle, making them perfect for backyard flocks, confinement, or free-range systems. Hens occasionally go broody, and when they do, they are excellent mothers. With a steady laying habit, they produce medium brown eggs at a rate of about 180–260 per year, depending on diet, daylight, and flock management. Black Laced Silver Wyandottes adapt well to most climates and thrive in a roosting height of 2 to 4 feet. For breeding, a mating ratio of 9 hens to 1 rooster is ideal, with typical fertility percentages around 60–75%. Pullets usually show gender accuracy of 85–90% when sold as chicks. These birds are calm, friendly, and make a great choice for families or anyone looking for a reliable, productive, and beautiful flock member. Cackle Hatchery® has been developing its production strain of Black Laced Silver Wyandottes since 1989, ensuring strong laying traits, consistent fertility, and excellent maternal instincts. At limited times of the year, we offer fertile hatching eggs and started pullets for this breed. NOTE: In 2014 Cackle Hatchery® started using a better descriptive name for our Wyandotte’s. With the emergence of the Blue Laced Red Wyandotte and other colors, we feel it would be less confusing to have a fully descriptive breed name. So, the Silver Laced Wyandotte is now called Black Laced Silver Wyandotte by Cackle Hatchery® Check out our blog “Wyandotte Chickens in the Heritage Breed Spotlight” Black Laced Silver Wyandotte FAQs What color eggs do Black Laced Silver Wyandottes lay?
