Description Golden Comet Chicken The Golden Comet Chicken is one of Cackle Hatchery®’s most dependable and productive brown egg layers. Developed through modern hybrid breeding, this high-performing strain was created from a proprietary Cackle Hatchery® bloodline—a Cherry Egger male crossed with a Rhode Island White female—to produce a bird that combines fast body development, early egg production, and rich brown eggshell color. Golden Comets are color sexable as chicks, which means you can easily tell the males from females right after hatching. The pullet chicks (females) are typically brownish-red, while the cockerel chicks (males) are white. As adults, hens display a lovely mix of brown and white feathers, while roosters can range from nearly all white to white with striking red shoulder feathers. Most have yellow legs, though some show a light greenish tint—a charming trait that reflects their hybrid heritage. These birds were designed for performance and efficiency. Golden Comet hens begin laying at a younger age than most standard breeds and produce an impressive 250–320 large brown eggs per year (see FAQ). Their eggs are uniform in size and color, making them one of the best choices for both backyard keepers and small-scale egg producers. Weighing 5 to 7 pounds for hens and 8 to 9 pounds for roosters, Golden Comets are a medium-sized production breed. They’re active yet friendly, well-suited to confinement or free-range environments, and known for their calm, easygoing temperament. Though broodiness varies, their reliability as layers and strong feed-to-egg conversion ratio make them an excellent investment for consistent egg production. Golden Comets prefer roosts between 2 and 4 feet high, have a fertility rate of 65–80%, and display gender accuracy between 95–100% when sold as chicks. While not recognized by the American Poultry Association, their outstanding productivity has made them a favorite in backyard flocks across the United States. Cackle Hatchery® has been developing and refining its Golden Comet bloodline since 1997, ensuring every generation maintains strong production traits, dependable fertility, and excellent vigor. These birds are available as day-old chicks and occasionally as fertile hatching eggs during select times of the year. Golden Comets are prolific layers, producing around 250 to 320 large brown eggs per year. Many hens begin laying as early as 16 to 18 weeks of age, making them one of the fastest maturing and most consistent layers available. What are the pros and cons of Golden Comets? The biggest advantages of Golden Comets are their exceptional egg production, early maturity, and gentle nature. They are perfect for beginners and families due to their friendliness and calm temperament. The main trade-off is that, as a hybrid production breed, their offspring will not breed true and will vary in color and performance. What color eggs do Golden Comet chickens lay? Golden Comets lay large, rich brown eggs with a smooth, glossy shell. Their consistent coloring and size make them a favorite for both home use and small egg businesses.
