Description Cuckoo Marans Chicken Breed History and Origin The Cuckoo Marans Chicken was developed in France, specifically in the coastal town of Marans, during the mid-1800s. The breed later gained global attention for its unique egg color and solid production traits. Today, Marans are recognized by the American Poultry Association within the Continental Class, though specific color varieties may not all be individually standardized. Cackle Hatchery® has been developing its production-type Cuckoo Marans bloodline since 1999, focusing on strong egg production, reliable growth rate, and good overall flock performance. In the United States, the Cuckoo Marans is still considered somewhat rare, making it a popular choice for poultry keepers looking for something both productive and unique. Appearance and Breed Characteristics The Cuckoo Marans have a black and white feather pattern that is often compared to the Barred Plymouth Rock. Unlike some European strains, Cackle Hatchery®’s production line typically has limited to no feathering on the legs, which many backyard keepers prefer for easier management in muddy or wet conditions. Check out our blog to learn more about the differences between Cuckoo Marans and French Cuckoo Marans. These birds grow relatively quickly and develop into a solid dual-purpose size. Mature hens typically weigh around 7 pounds, while roosters average about 9 pounds. Pullets generally weigh around 6 pounds, and cockerels about 7 pounds. Egg Production and Egg Color Cuckoo Marans are best known for their deep chocolate brown eggs, which are among the darkest brown eggs produced by chickens. Egg color is often measured on a Marans color scale and typically ranges from about #3 to #6 shades of dark brown. Some eggs may show darker speckling or pigment spots, which is normal for the breed. The darkness of the egg shell can vary throughout a hen’s laying cycle. Nutrition plays a role in shell quality, and proper levels of calcium and Vitamin K may help support strong shell color and strength, though natural color variation is expected. Under good conditions, hens produce approximately 180 or more large eggs per year, depending on care, lighting, and nutrition. Temperament and Flock Management Cuckoo Marans are generally considered an active breed, but they are still manageable in backyard and mixed flock settings. Broodiness can vary by individual hen, and some may make good mothers when allowed to hatch and raise chicks naturally. They prefer roost heights between two and four feet and typically perform best with a breeding ratio of about nine females to one male. Fertility rates commonly fall between 60 and 75 percent, with chick gender accuracy typically ranging between 80 and 85 percent. Availability and Related Breeds Many poultry keepers who enjoy this breed also like the original European strain, the French Cuckoo Marans, which can show heavier feathering on the legs and slightly different production characteristics. Cackle Hatchery® also offers Cuckoo Marans Started Pullets and, at limited times of the year, Cuckoo Marans Fertile Hatching Eggs.
