Description Brown Leghorn Chicken Breed History and Origin The Brown Leghorn Chicken is one of the classic Mediterranean egg-laying breeds and was admitted to the American Standard of Perfection in 1874. The breed traces its development through poultry breeding programs in Italy, Denmark, and England, where it became known for early maturity and exceptional egg production. White and Brown Leghorns share a common Italian heritage as active, flighty, and excellent white-egg layers with large combs. Today, the Brown Leghorn remains an important production egg breed and is recognized as a sustainable heritage chicken breed with recovery conservation status. Cackle Hatchery® has been developing its pure Brown Leghorn production bloodline since 1976, focusing on strong laying performance, feed efficiency, and flock durability. Egg Production and Performance Brown Leghorns are known for producing large to extra-large white eggs at very high rates. Hens commonly lay around 280 eggs per year, with strong layers sometimes reaching 300 to 320 eggs annually under ideal management conditions. This breed is highly efficient at converting feed into eggs. Brown Leghorns typically consume about 125 grams of feed per day, making them one of the most economical production layers available. Because they are non-setters, Brown Leghorns rarely go broody. This allows for steady, uninterrupted egg production throughout much of the year. Temperament and Free Range Performance Brown Leghorns are considered a very athletic and active breed. They mature early, are naturally hardy, and are excellent foragers. This makes them ideal for free-range and organic egg production systems where birds benefit from supplementing their diet through natural foraging. They are alert and predator-aware, which helps them avoid danger in free-range settings. However, they are typically less interested in human interaction compared to heavier backyard breeds and may appear more nervous or flighty. Size and Breed Characteristics Brown Leghorns are considered a lightweight production breed and are not typically raised for meat production. Mature hens generally weigh about 4½ pounds, while roosters average about 6 pounds. Pullets weigh around 4 pounds, and cockerels average close to 5 pounds. They prefer higher roosting locations than many breeds and often select roost heights between four and eight feet. For breeding purposes, they perform best with a mating ratio of approximately twelve females to one male. Fertility typically ranges between 60 and 75 percent, with chick gender accuracy commonly falling between 80 and 85 percent when professionally sexed.
