Description As a French institution, it is in the Monnaie de Paris’s DNA to highlight heritage, history, and everything related to the country’s core identity. In the past, the Monnaie de Paris had celebrated French regions in several of its collections, but not since their redesign in 2016. Ten years after the introduction of the 18 new regions that make up metropolitan and overseas France, the Monnaie de Paris (Paris Mint) is launching a collection celebrating the richness of these territories. As local authorities with broad and diverse powers, the regions are more than just an administrative division. They possess genuine identities, marked by traditions born from their geographical and historical specificities. The regions reflect the richness of France’s natural and cultural heritage. In 2026, Île-de-France, Occitanie, and Grand Est are featured. Occitanie: The face of this coin brings together symbols dear to the Occitanie region. Together, they summarize the essence of what constitutes the region’s identity. At the center of the drawing, adorned with the region’s name, the Occitan cross links all the other depicted elements. To the right, an illustrious figure from the region is represented and named: Olympe de Gouges, a writer and revolutionary born in Montauban. Below her portrait are the Roman arenas of Nîmes, illustrating the region’s millennia-old architectural heritage. On the left, Occitanie’s natural heritage is represented by a view of the Pyrenees mountain range and the bust of an ibex from these mountains. Finally, a starry sky in which the planet Saturn floats and a rocket flies refers to the aerospace industry, inextricably linked to the region’s capital: Toulouse.
